Love Letters - A Valentine's Day Giveaway

Every year we race to and then through the holiday season, only to be confronted with yet another cause célèbre - Valentine's Day, the day we all love to hate.

Yes it is contrived, superficial, and corporately sponsored. Yes it is filled with garish colours and textures; frills and bows and velvets. Valentine's day, some could argue, is a box of chocolates filled with questionable and indistinguishable cream fillings.

But it is also the day that forces us to pause and to think about those people most treasured in our lives, those people who keep us happy and for the most part sane. It is a day above all others to remember those we sometimes take for granted.
And while we may all cringe at the mention of the notorious V-day, it is for that reason that we all dive into Valentine's Day head first.

So when was the last time you wrote a love letter to the apple of your eye? A little note, poem, or sentence that says all those things we are often to busy to mention as often as we should. If making your love swoon isn't enough of an incentive, perhaps we can sweeten the pink and red pot.

Weekend Workshops - NOW at 18Karat

Over the last couple of years I think we have all come to notice the rise in interest in crafting of all kinds - be it knitting, pottery and winemaking. People want to use their hands to create the things they love.

Whether this is a way for us to push against our technology obsessed culture or a desire to reach back to a time when all things where crafted by hand by local artisans, more and more people want to take the time to learn how to do things themselves.

Well jewellery lovers, we have just the thing for you - weekend jewellery workshops.

Over the course of a single Saturday you will learn how to cut, saw, solder, print, and polish your very own sterling silver pendant, earring, band, or all three!

Classes are small, with a maximum of 5 people, and are run by our Master Goldsmith Dino Giannetti - a goldsmith who at one time (many moons ago) apprenticed in some of the most renowned Italian workshops. He has since been creating fine jewellery in our downtown shop for over 40 years.

Classes begin January 21st, from 11 - 4pm.

Ammolite Amulets

Ammolite is undeniably the Canadian gemstone and one of the rarest gemstones on the planet. As rare as red diamonds, ammolite is only found along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

Ammolite has characteristics similar to opals, but they are actually the fossilized shells of Ammonites - extinct marine invertebrates closely related to present day octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish. The stones themselves are composed of aragonite, the same mineral that makes up a pearls nacre.

Ammolite is a very fragile material, prone to flaking and disintegrating. To prevent this, ammolite is impregnated with a clear epoxy or synthetic resin that coats the stone, protecting it from damage - similar to the treatment opals undergo.

We just picked up these stunning, and very large ammolites - now we have to figure out what to do with them!

1980's - a mini-fashion history

Love it or hate it - the 80's was a decade that aimed at discovering, promoting, and setting apart the individual. Soap operas such as Dynasty and Dallas made conspicuous consumption fashionable - bulky gold necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings along with flashy diamonds and pearls became acceptable accessories both during the day as well as at night.

Perhaps the most iconic trend of the 80's was the angular and tailored silhouette of the power suit - thanks in large part rise of shoulder pads. Where as in the 1970's close fitting tops were paired with flared and wide-legged jeans and trousers, the 80's was the exact opposite - skinny legs with wide and often shimmering tops.

This trend gave rise to the much reviled Yuppie movement - as younger people began to rise the corporate ladder their need to demonstrate their new found success became front and center. Designer fashions and fine gold jewellery were an important way to tell the world that you had arrived and that everything - wealth, success, and power - were all at your fingertips.(Large gemstones and even bigger hair)

For the first time in over a decade 'dressing up' and occasion-wear became fashionable again - with those who could not afford diamond and gemstone brooches, earrings, necklaces, and rings pushing a resurgence in costume jewellery - complete with all the diamante jeweller's glue could hold.

At the opposite end of the spectrum was the punk movement which had by 80's more or less reached the mainstream. Born in the 1970's early punk was motivated by anti-materialism and a revolt againts the perceived excess and pretension of mainstream society, especially mainstream music. Dirty, torn, second-hand clothing were punks' answer to the glam-rock that dotted the 70's music scene. By the 1980's fashion designers like Vivian Westwood and Malcom McLaren were producing punk-inspired styles, featuring ripped fishnet stockings, offensive t-shirts, spikes, and BDSM-inspired collars. It wasn't long before punk trends were found in glamorous fashion magazines and other media.

But the trend that begs the title for most unique of 1980 must be the New Romantics - epitomized by characters like Adam Ant and Boy George. The New Romantics adopted fictional and factual themes from history and Hollywood - including billowing silken fabric and lace - to create a look that epitomized the dramatic, the flamboyant, and the ever-so-slightly narcissistic. The New Romantics movement peaked in the mid-80's with new-wave bands such as Duran Duran spreading the trend through MTV.

This ring immediately reminded me of the geometric-trapezoidal forms that were so popular in the 1980's - for me it recalls the magical landscapes found in those fantastical 80's movies like The Dark Crystal or The Labyrinth. David Bowie!

1970's - a mini-fashion history

Just like the 1960's - the decade to follow was an amalgamation of contrasting styles and aesthetics. The androgynous hippie born in the late 60's, with their bell-bottoms and long hair, continued throughout the 70's.

Nature themes and ethnic influences were at the forefront, with fashion and jewellery heavily influenced by Indian, Egyptian, Asian, and Native American styles. Wood, leather, pukka shells, turquoise, and opals were popular for their rough, raw, and organic forms.

The 70's also gave rise to the glam rock and punk movements that would only gain strength throughout the 80's - including ripped jeans, torn shirts, and safety-pin jewellery. But my favorite movement from the 70's would have to be the art nouveau revival that seemed to sweep across the decade almost unconsciously. It was not so much a movement that cherished the past as being a better time (as we so eagerly do today) but a revolt against the often grim and soul-less modular expressions of 60's art and architecture. Flat geometric shapes gave rise to a wave of the 'psychadellic' that was popular with graphic artists and designers - particularly when it came to album covers, band posters, advertisements and film.

I love the contrast between the rigid and controlled aesthetic of the 1960's and the "oddly disturbing, writhing forms, and almost erotic character" of art nouveau, (check out this great article from Time Magazine about the revival, when it was just beginning).

This ring was hand-carved out of wax by Dino in the 1970's - it's remarkable the amount of detail that remains from the casting. The band consists of a woman and a small child lost in a wave of billowing silk - to form of the woman's body creates the band itself.

After finding this wax, I couldn't help but to have it cast. Being a child of the 80's, wood-paneling was a ghost from the past that only reared its head when visiting your grandparents basement. But somehow, as a piece of jewellery, I find it to be very compelling - especially the contrast between the rings grain and smooth skin.

1960's - a mini-fashion history

The 1960's was the decade of 'anything goes' - a decade of rapid and unprecedented change both politically and culturally. The miniskirts, platforms, and PVC of the Mods mixed with the crushed velvet, brocade waste coats, and long hair of the Edwardian resurgence.

One of the most prominent movements, centered in London, was youthquake - a movement that recognized for the first time the power of youth to influence fashion and culture. The youthquake movement marked the moment teenage spending had reached never before seen levels - teenagers for the first time had money to burn.

Super models Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy became the fashion icons of the 1960's with designers Mary Quant (inventor of both the mini-skirt and hot pants) and Betsey Johnson at the helm of the youthquake movement.

In jewellery, over-sized and abstract forms were the foundation of every good collection. Every piece was to be a statement piece, using extra large gemstones - mainly quartz and cabochons resting in bulky, organically inspired settings. Big earrings, big beads, bangles, and cocktail rings were fundamental.

This rings is one of my favorites - cast from a wax Dino originally created in 1968 - this ring successfully partners a substantial volume with graceful design. The ring seems to effortlessly bellow - like sheets hung out to dry, blowing in the wind.

FIELD TRIP - Wobito Custom Gem Cutting

Last Saturday I tagged along with Dino and his family to visit the world renowned Wobito Brothers in Stouffville, Ontario. The two brothers are third generation Master Gem Cutters, and Rudi generously spent a couple of hours showing us around the studio - demonstrating the many gem-cutting stages.

Not only are the Wobito brothers known for their unusual cuts (more on the Wobito Snowflake later) they are also the cutters the world turns to when exceptionally rare stones must be cut. As a matter of fact, they are the sole cutters of Zultanite, one of the rarest and most recently discovered gemstones.

All of the Zultanite rough mined exclusively in Turkey's Anatolian Mountains are shipped to the Wobito brothers - they must examine each piece and select the rough that will yield the largest and most beautiful stones. The rest are shipped to a cutting factory in India or Brazil.

Only a very small percentage of each piece of rough will ultimately be used to create a gemstone - much of the rough is riddled with inclusions and fractures that make it unusable. A Master Cutter like Rudi can look at a rough and map out the parts that will yield that largest and best stones. Some rough will only yield one stone while others will ultimately produce a couple.

Using a diamond coated saw-blade, Rudi carefully separates the useable from the un-usable. In almost every gem-cutting process, water plays an integral roll – surrounding the saw is a wet cloth, this helps to prevent the stone from overheating and shattering.

Using diamond coated grinding wheels with various grits, the Zultanite rough is shaped into a more recognizable form - be it a round, oval, square, etc. Again, notice the wet cloths.

Using wax and heat, the stone is attached to a dop stick, allowing the stone to be more accurately handled during the extremely precise stages to follow. Notice how many of the cutting processes are done almost entirely by eye.

The stones final shape is now formed, meeting whatever size requirements a customer has requested. Here Rudi shapes the tablet of the stone and the foundation for facets is laid.

Most gemstones require many many facets, all cut into the stone to ensure its maximum sparkle. These facets must be ground into the stone individually and it happens quickly - there is no room for error if the facet is cut in the wrong place or the wrong size.

After all of the facets are cut into the stone, they must now be individually polished. This is done by using a finer grit of diamond dust.

You may think that a process as precise as gem-cutting would be more automated, but you will probably be even more surprised to learn that the majority of the tools and machines used by the Wobito brothers are actually of their own construction and design. Many of the grinding wheels like the one pictured above are cast, formed, and coated in diamond dust in their shop - as a matter of fact 1/4 of the studio is filled with equipment needed to make gem-cutting equipment.

My photos certainly don't do Zultanite justice - they barely capture Zultanite's main colour, and certainly don't hint at the stones lovely colour changes. For that, I turn to the Zultanite website.

Zultanite appears differently depending on what light it is viewed under - from a gold-green to a gold-pink and everywhere in between.

But, Zultanite is certainly not the only gemstone the Wobito brothers cut - they make gem-cutting a bona-fide art form.

Now I ask you, who would ever lust after a round cut diamond after seeing what the Wobito brothers are capable of? Standard stones are just plain boring to me now - thanks Wobito Brothers.

BUYER BEWARE - Invisible Settings

Imagine a vast expanse of glittering diamonds...

Invisible settings have become very popular in the last decade and for obvious reasons - get the illusion of a much larger diamond using many smaller stones with a more affordable price tag.

Illusion settings are created using smaller stones, in the example to the right four smaller princess cut stones are set directly beside each other to give the impression of a large singular stone.

Except for the four corners of the setting, there are no claws or bezels holding the stones in place - they seem to just be floating in place.

But underneath the stone is a grid that supports the stones from beneath. What you can't see is that there are actually small grooves cut into the stones themselves - the metal slides into these grooves, effectively 'snapping' the stones in place.

Pretty ingenious if you ask me, but I had noticed a steady stream of these settings - always rings - coming into the shop. And more peculiar then that, I was surprised at how reluctant Dino, the goldsmith who loves a good challenge, was to work them.

"There is very little material holding these stones into place and any slight impact could disrupt the tension needed to keep everything together. Any slight shift could cause the stones to fall out or chip. The stones are essentially rubbing together and one whack could cause the diamonds to crack one and other."

"Replacing a stone that has fallen out or chipped not only means having a new stone cut with the v-groove needed to 'snap' the diamond in place - but there is no guarantee that this diamond or the other stones in the setting won't come loose during the repair or after the customer leaves the shop."

"Even the most basic repairs or maintenance of these pieces puts the whole setting at risk. The vibrations caused by the polishing wheel or ultra-sonic (used to clean the inside crevices) could cause stones to pop out".

"It is a beautiful look - but for everyday rings especially - they truly are a goldsmiths nightmare. Anyone with one of these settings that are in need of repair or even a good cleaning will not only face an expensive repair but will have difficulty finding a goldsmith willing and more importantly able to do the job."

Knowing that we have and continue to repair these settings, I asked Dino to give me some insight into why these settings were so costly and time consuming to repair. He explained how in some cases, the entire setting would have to be rebuilt from scratch with a thin bezel being added to the top of the setting to hold the stones - that would need to also be reset - more securely. Reconstructing the setting in this was would cost several hundred dollars.

"Most people are shocked to find out how much repairs to these settings will cost, but since many of these settings are sold as engagement rings there is a big emotional connection to each piece. And this can put people in a painful predicament - having spent money on a ring that is so quickly in need of major repair."

I asked Dino why we had never used this setting in our own work - Dino obviously liked the look of the setting and had seemed to problem solve many of the settings flaws.

"It is not worth it. I almost did, especially when these rings first hit the market and some beautiful work was being produced in this style and they were in huge demand. But the more I thought about it the more I realized that we could not risk our integrity as goldsmiths to create something just because it would be an easy sell."

"The very nature of the beast means that there is only so much you can do to bolster the strength of the setting and it will never be at a level that I would be comfortable with. Our business is based on a loyal client base - customers who come back again and again and refer their friends either for custom work or repairs and selling an item that I could not stand behind 100% could mean loosing a customer and jeopardizing our integrity as goldsmiths. I would always wonder if today is the day my customer is going to come back - dissatisfied with a piece I knew was potentially problematic."

I am no Master Goldsmith, but what I do know is that sometimes, no matter how much we know we shouldn't.. we do it anyways and that most certainly applies to jewellery. I have seen some invisible settings that are remarkable for the way they give the illusion of diamonds seamlessly spread across bands, along shanks and around bezels - as if the rings were carved out of a giant diamond itself. And because of the beauty of these rings, invisible settings are most definitely here to stay.

But most importantly - know the risks. Make sure you are educated about the jewellery you are about to purchase, not only because of the money you are spending but also because nothing hurts your heart more then having the jewellery pieces you saved for or were given by your sweetheart fall apart before your eyes.

For two years now 18Karat has invited local jewellery artists into our shop - promoting and selling their work alongside our own. We have met many exciting and talented jewellers that we thought it was about time to introduce one to you.

Kathryn Rebecca is a new addition to our shop. We met her during last years RED show featuring the artists of Jewel Envy studio.

Here's my mini-interview with Kathryn:

Where do you come from and what brought you to the city?
I grew up in Bala, a quaint town in beautiful Muskoka, ON. I moved to Toronto in order to attend George Brown College for the Jewellery Arts program.

What got you started in jewellery?

I have always loved the excitement of creativity. Letting your imagination come up with a concept or idea and then using your hands to bring that idea to a reality is such a fun process. As I thought about what to do for post-secondary education, I looked at what I loved to do in my spare time and decided to pursue my passion. I strove to choose a career I loved and I'm thankful that thus far it has proven to be a successful strategy!

Do you prefer the designing or the constructing?
I don't prefer one to the other. Designing is a time of excitement and anticipation, which is amazing. Constructing is a time of bringing the designs to reality and coming up against issues that may not have been accounted for in the design process; you have to use your creativity and experience to come up with solutions along the way. The sense of satisfaction I receive from soldering a tricky seam keeps me passionate about constructing jewellery.

What inspires you?
My love for nature and for the city and the challenge of combining these two areas of inspiration.
In custom work, I am often inspired by the love a piece of jewellery can represent. I'm proud to create pieces that can help capture some of that love and mean something special to my client.
I am also very blessed to have amazing family and friends who inspire and encourage me daily!

Who are your favorite designers?
I have so many favorites!!! I love designers who have started small and worked hard to get to where they are. I have a lot of respect for goldsmiths with more experience than myself. A few examples of these are Anne Sportun, Shelly Purdy and Massimo and Dino Giannetti. Other designers I love are Jelena of Poppyseed living, who does beautiful refinished furniture, and Karen Carrillo of KooCoo, who does quality made clothes and accessories. It is so encouraging to get to know fellow entrepreneurs!

What does the word red conjure up in your mind and does it only represent a colour or a hue?
Red means many things to many different people, in one moment it can symbolize love and passion. In another it becomes a sign of aggression and anger.

The artists of Jewel Envy studio in downtown Toronto have created a body of work that explores this very question - what does RED mean? Featuring works by Gillian Batcher (Jewel Envy owner), Alexis Kostuk, Chia Chien Tsai, Efrat Deutsch, Emily Gill, Kathryn Rebecca, Rosalyn Woo, Sarah De Gasperis, and Young Ko.

Hybrid - Collaboration at the Harbourfront Center

About two weeks ago, Meredith Robb (you may recognize her as a member of the 18Karat family) and Rose-Angeli Ringor opened a beautiful exhibition at the Harbourfront Centre in downtown Toronto.

Stopping by the show, and snapping a few shots, I am sure you will all be impressed by this merging of organic and inorganic industrial forms. The show continues at the Harbourfront Center until November 7th.

Hybrid : is an experiment in collaboration between a ceramic artist and a metalworker. Each piece began with one artist and was finished by the other, pushing Harbourfront Centre artists-in-residence Ringor and Robb to unify both their media and their creative processes.

Expensive Tastes - the woes of a nickel allergy.

You want it.
You need it.
You just have to have it.
But when you wear it, your skin starts to itch and burn and then blister!

Sound familiar? Unfortunately for you (and one is seven people from across the globe) you have a nickel allergy. Nickel is the root cause of the most common jewellery allergy and it can often mean that funky fashion jewellery is off limits.

When I was a teenager, I loved wearing the most outrageous (and in some circles obnoxious) vintage earrings - all cheap and all costume. From large pastel coloured disks to 70's inspired gold toned chandelier earrings - the bigger the better.

Then, almost overnight it seemed, while wearing my favorite pair of mint 80's art deco/Miami Beach inspired studs - my ears began to get hot, red, and frankly vengeful. From that moment on, try as I may, no earrings seemed to sit right in my now very exclusive ear lobes.

It was only after I came to 18Karat did I realize the toll some base metals can take on our bodies - and costume jewellery is all base metals. It is not that our bodies are allergic to the metals themselves, but they are allergic to the salts created through a chemical reaction between your skins natural oils and perspiration and the metal. As our body actively corrodes the metals away, we are left feeling sore and entirely unfashionable.

A nickel allergy is not something we are necessarily born with, and can often develop as we get older - as your body's chemistry evolves throughout the years and can especially effect women during and after pregnancy.

Not only is nickel found in stainless steel, it is also a key metal used in the alloy for white gold - nickel is actually the bleaching agent that turns yellow gold white. Low-karated gold, 10k and below, are especially problematic as they contain a more substantial percentage of nickle, making it more irritable to sensitive skin.

A nickel allergy can be especially upsetting if you begin to notice discomfort when wearing your white gold wedding set - especially if you have had the rings for year beforehand.

Luckily there are solutions. If you believe you are beginning to develop an allergy to one of your precious gems, bring it into your local jeweller. You should first ask for them to thoroughly clean the item. Overtime, chemicals can accumulate in the nooks and crevices of your gems - especially if you wear them everyday. These chemicals, such as soaps and lotions, can start to wreak havoc on your skin.

If this does not work, you can get these gems rhodium plated - providing a barrier between your skin and the nickel within the item. Rhodium is a member of the platinum family of metals and is rarely a source of allergic reaction.

If you have questions about metal allergies and what you can do to start wearing your jewellery again, contact a knowledgeable jeweller.

Mokume-Gane - from sheath to shank.

Mokume-Gane is a metal forging technique originating in Japan that has seen a popular resurgence in the last decade.

Beginning in the late 1600's, the samurai sword began to evolve from being a tool used in battle to a symbol of an elite warrior class. The more elaborate the embellishments of the sword's handle and sheath, the greater the social standing of the owner.

Mokume-Gane was one form of embellishment - meaning wood grain metal - mokume is formed by the forging of various metals including gold, silver, copper, and an alloy of all three known as shakudo at various thicknesses.

Patterning occurs when layers from within the billet are exposed, either by filling or chiseling away at the surface layers.

Until the late 1970's, Mokume-Gane was relatively unknown outside of Asia, and with Japan's movement away from traditional manufacturing techniques and a dwindling population of highly skilled artisans - this metal art form was almost lost.

Today however, artist from many disciplines use modern Mokume-Gane techniques to create a unique and distinctive aesthetic - no two Mokume-Gane pieces are ever exactly the same.

Who doesn't love the deep and intense blues of a well formed sapphire? But did you also know that sapphires come in a variety of luscious colours including pink, orange, and yellow?Emerald cut sapphire with mother of pearl inlay set in 18k yellow gold.

Sapphires, like rubies, are members of the corundum family, an aluminum oxide. Trace amounts of iron, chromium, or titanium lend sapphires their distinguished colour.

One of the most ancient gemstones, sapphires were being used in jewellery making prior to Roman Empire and are often referred to in the Bible.

However, because of their hardness and durability, sapphires are now found in many industrial processes such as infrared optical components, high-durability windows such as watch crystals, and as insulating substrates for some solid-state electronics.

Sapphires have often been thought to cure and prevent a range of health issues from rheumatism to a sore throat. It is also believed by some to have metaphysical properties that can aid in telepathy and clairvoyance.

Sapphires can also have colour change properties, depending on the light source it is being viewed under. Some stones will appear blue in daylight, and violet under incandescent light.

Sapphires with tiny rutile inclusion can also display an optical quality referred to as asterism - creating a star-sapphire. Star sapphires display either a six or twelve ray star that travels along the stone as it moves - catching light at different angles.

Despite how busy we have been this year, July marks the first exhibition we will be hosting at 18Karat - the first of many to follow, (check out our upcoming events).

Beginning July 5th, 18Karat will host Emerge 2010 - a group show featuring recent graduates of George Brown's Jewellery Arts program. We are excited to be the first studio to host their work post-graduation and we are excited to watch them maneuver the world of professional jewellery design.

Last year marked the first time graduates from George Brown took centerstage at 18Karat. We continue to be impressed by their technical abilities as well as their innovative design.

Exhibition runs from July 5 - 31, with a reception to be June 5th from 5 - 7pm. Please join us in supporting these young designers.

New buds. Flowers being born everyday. Spring is full of vivid colours and a sense of the earth being re-born. That is why no spring collection would be complete without some delightful shocks of colour.
An unusual-cut peridot surrounded by a rim of brilliant cut diamonds make this ring the ultimate in a spring-time statement. This ring was designed and created by Dino in our downtown studio. It is also up on our website, check it out.

While agate, a form of quartz, is one of the most abundant minerals on the planet - agate this vivid is certainly not common place. This turquoise agate ring recalls Caribbean beaches or endless summer skies - either way it makes for a truly wonderful ring. Set in 18k white gold, this ring as designed and created in our studio as well.

As is always the case, the more interesting events you are participating in and the more intriguing people you meet, the less time you have to blog about it; and April has certainly not been an exception to that rule.

We have launched a new website! Months and months in the making I am so happy to see it up, with the majority of our inventory available for viewing in a much more cohesive format. I hope you will all check it out, www.18karat.ca.

Envy - Call for Entry announced. This is the first time we have ever done anything quite like this before, but we have recently announced our call for entry for our first juried show and I have been really impressed by the response. I can now breath easier knowing we have received our first batch of entries. Although we are still accepting entries until the end of May, I know too well how artists are and I expect a flurry towards the end – don't forget to get them in artists!

Our first graduate award. This was the first year for the new 18Karat award for graduates of the Jewellery Arts Program at George Brown, handed out to the student who demonstrated both design and technical excellence, as well as someone who stood out with both their drive and determination. This years winner was Mariangela Aguirre, who has a lovely site already, www.malala.ca. We are all excited to work with her more this year.

With the Uniti Collection counting down its last few days, I thought it would be a good idea to take a break from the bids and the paddle numbers to present you the latest addition to the 18Karat list of local designers.

Carmen Tam is a recent graduate from George Brown's Jewellery Arts program, and has been working at the Organic Metal Gallery on College Street.

Carmen has a graphic style and geometric sensibility that inhibits each piece. Currently we have a matching set of silver and garnet, necklace and earrings (pictured to the right and bellow).

Perhaps my favorite piece in her collection, are the pair of earrings to the right. The interesting thing about these sterling silver beauties, it that they are adjustable. Each circular disk is attached to the next via a double-ended screw top attachment, meaning you can remove links or re-arrange their order however you see fit. Despite their size, they are remarkably light-weight.

Shelly Purdy is one of Toronto's most talented jewellery artists, and why wouldn't she be, she apprenticed here at 18Karat.

When Uniti was in it's cellular stage, Shelly was key in helping us brainstorm, so we were thrilled when she was matched up with Alexandra Weston, to create a piece that would represent the Weston family and their perspective on family and community.

Having recently started her own family, Alexandra chose stacking rings to symbolize family,

"I wanted to design a ring because for me, in keeping with tradition, a ring symbolizes love and commitment through all good and bad & the strength it takes to keep one's love strong through it all. It can be seen as a commitment to one's family. Having a ring that is two parts represented the caregiver and those more dependent & sheltered. We wanted the ring to be stackable as a family should be able to grow."

Uniti Uniti Uniti + Elvis Stojko

We were very excited to hear that World Champion Figure Skater Elvis Stojko was interested in participating in our jewellery arts auction – even more excited when I learned that his designer would be yours truly.

And now for a little selfish blogging....

It has been a year since we started blogging, bringing you the in's and the out's of Toronto's jewellery arts scene from the perspective of our little family run shop. But how much do you really know about your lead blogger.... me?

A whole lot more now.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, jewellery design is my latest venture. Having focused primarily on drawing and printmaking, the challenge of designing in the three-dimensional is a challenge I have met gladly, although there are some bleaker moments. Now, as a member of the 18Karat family, I am learning how to turn pen and paper into metal and stone.

Early in September, I met with Elvis Stojko as he was performing at the CNE to discuss the jewellery piece we were set to collaborate on for our Uniti jewellery auction.

I was a little surprised by how many ideas Elvis already had, and we soon came up with the basis that would form a very lovely pendant.

The reoccurring theme from our meeting was the idea that family and community shape you into the person you become - protecting and pushing us forward.

Above, you can see the process of cutting and shaping a piece of rose quartz that will fit into the center of the pendant, flanked on both sides by black onyx.

The Uniti auction begins November 12th, with the pieces being on display at our shop, and up for auction via Waddington's online auction.

Amy Kovach – Uniti Designer

Electric excitement is zipping through 275 Dundas Street West, and no it has nothing to do with the rainstorm hitting the streets outside. No this excitement is all about the young jewellery artists creating beautiful gems that are due to begin arriving any day now.

But until they do, perhaps a little teaser - another little peek into what these very talented individuals have in store for us in the upcoming Uniti auction.

Amy Kovach has a keen eye for graceful organic shapes with an obvious appreciation for the simplicity found in nature. A few months ago, Amy met with singer Justin Hines, with popular songs 'Wish You Well' and 'Say What You Will'.

Amy's piece will be a stacking three-band ring that symbolizes what family and community means to both Amy and Justin.

A little birdy told us that this piece is ready and on its way to our shop. Hands up who's excited?

Uniti - Darlene Martin meets Jenn Valentyne

Yesterday was the last day of our Emerge exhibit, marking the end of a straight 7months of exhibits featuring local artists in our shop. During the month of October, we will not be hosting a show, as we prepare for Uniti.

So while we are busy at work, we thought we would show another designer busy putting her piece together for the charity auction in benefit of the Red Door Family Shelter.

Darlene Martin was the first designer to be featured in our shop and has done a lot to bring this auction to life. Last week she met with Jenn Valentyne from Breakfast Television, and is busy creating a piece that symbolizes family and community to them both.

The colour green is at the core of this piece, as it symbolizes to both Darlene and Jenn life, family, and home.

As we get closer to the auction date, the anticipation is growing as we wait to have all of these beautiful pieces in our shop.

Thank you to everyone who wrote in with such warm words of kindness and encouragement after listening to our short feature on the CBC. Feeling like celebrities for a day was a new feeling for us here at 18Karat.

But the good news doesn't end there as the designers working with us in our Uniti campaign continue to send in their sketches and discuss their projects with us.

You might remember Therese Cruz, one of the young artists we are currently featuring in our shop. Therese met with Paula Brancati of Degrassi and Dark Oracle fame, and is now creating a piece of jewellery that symbolizes what family and community mean to them both.

Therese liked the idea of creating a bangle because of how closely it sits on the body, entwining and encircling the wrist.

The inspiration for this cuff comes from the different threads that create a piece a fabric; many pieces coming together to create a whole. For both Therese and Paula, this action of coming together was key to both a successful community and a happy family.

Using copper, silver, and gold, this piece is sure to be a stunner.

Meghan Lynn Schnarr only recently graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, specializing in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing, but already her work has been featured in galleries all over Ontario.

Meghan's keen sense on the personal connection we attach the jewellery, and its ability to preserve memory, made her the best candidate to meet with Gordon and Leah Pinsent to create a piece for Uniti.

Gordon and Leah saw Uniti as a way to pay tribute to their wife and mother Charmion King, and Meghan was the perfect designer to make this desire a reality.

Going Places....

Although months in the making, it seems about time for me to mention our upcoming event - one like no other. Currently we are organizing Uniti - Uniting Toronto for Families, a charity auction to benefit the Red Door Family Shelter.
Silent auction? Oh so - 'been there done that'.

Well.... not this one.

Unlike other auctions where the hold overs from last seasons/years/decades collection are auctioned off. For Uniti, each piece is being made especially.

It doesn't stop there however, each piece is a collaboration between a local designer and a local celebrity. Together they use their ideas of family and community to form the basis of a jewellery piece that will be donated, and then sold during our silent auction.
Who are these designers, and who are these celebs?

Our first match up was with Meghan Schnarr, an excellent young designer, and Gordon Pinsent and his daughter Leah, who are using this as an opportunity to pay tribute to their wife and mother, Charmion King.

Our second, was with the very talented Amy Kovach, and singer Justin Hines.

Our third, was with Therese Cruz, a recent graduate from George Brown's Jewellery Arts program and a featured artist in our shop, with Paula Brancati from Degrassi Next Generation and Dark Oracle.

Our fourth, with Samantha Hawkes, also a recent graduate and featured artist, with Raymond Ablack, also from Degrassi.

But that's not all. Just a little tease.

As the first half of our Emerge exhibit comes to a close, we would like to introduce you to the fifth and final designer we have been featuring at 18Karat.

So please welcome... Samantha Hawkes.

Born into an artistic family, Samantha inherited a deep appreciation for creativity and a true respect for artists. Samantha drove into the creative world at a young age, exploring various forms of art and media.

She has left little in the artistic world unexplored, having ventured into fashion design, music and countless forms of visual art. With a keen eye and a strong aesthetic, she first explored jewellery design through the beading world. Having developed her skill in jewellery design, Samantha finds great satisfaction in the creative process and artistic liberty which the field provides.

The reception we hosted for our young designers was certainly a success, thanks in no small part to the musical stylings of the Jessica Stuart Few, and the team of supporters from George Brown College.

But more of that later. Let me introduce our fourth designers... Ji-Sung Han.

Born in Busan, South Korea, Ji-Sung found her first love of crafting in origami - folding coloured paper into flowers, animals, and decorative pieces.

After moving to Canada in 1998, her artistic impulses re-emerged, and she entered George Brown's Jewellery Arts Program after graduating High School.

Ji-Sung's work reflects and explores the relationship between flowing lines and evocative curves.

"My favourite piece in this collection, is the Rose Ring. This was the final piece that I constructed, I wanted to create my collection as a set, so naturally the Rose Ring complimented the other pieces beautifully. It is the ideal piece because all the knowledge I gained about gold, silver, and anticlastic forming."

And I think we would have to agree with her, these rings are stunning. And lucky for us, they are on display and for sale at our shop.

Our Emerge exhibit has entered it's second week and I am pleased to introduce you to our third young designer – Margo Glenn.

Margo is from a small farming community in South-western Ontario. She globe trotted extensively before studying Jewellery Arts at George Brown, and will be starting her Masters Degree in Architecture in September.

She is inspired by nature, the innate qualities of the material at hand, and the introspective and expressive journey of creation. She works in gold, silver, copper, and has developed a unique line of jewellery based on an ancient leather hardening technique.

Perhaps her most ambitious piece, titled Anwedah, is a celebration of her Aunt's journey with Bariatric Surgery. Created in 14 karat yellow and white gold and diamonds, it contains a mechanical clasp, hand-made chain, and computer modeled components.

The wings of the butterfly move individually, and glitter with eight diamonds.

"Not only was this piece emotionally challenging to design, but it was by far the most complex and difficult piece I have created."

Margo's work will be on display as part of our Emerge exhibit which runs from August 1- September 30.

All five of our young designers have dropped off their jewellery at 18Karat and we are busy constructing new displays to accomodate all of their - sometimes uniquely formed - pieces.

Today, I would like to introduce you to.... Therese Cruz

For Therese Cruz, pursuing a career in jewellery started as a childhood hobby in the Philippines collecting 'fancy' costume jewellery given to her by her father.

When she moved to Canada, it gradually developed into a liking for art and design as a whole, and the technical aspects related to it.

It pushed her to get into George Brown College's Jewellery Arts program after highschool.
She currently resides in Toronto.

Growing up in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Shannon was always surrounded by artists - print makers, traditional sewers, carvers, and jewellers. It was the sense of creating – the tactility of construction with bare hands – that drew Shannon towards the arts.

Where DOES the time go?

My oh my, the summer is at its peak already and it has been a month since my last post.
I think some of our readers were thinking we had given up this ol' internet game.
Not true.

We have just been super duper, extra-ordinarily crazy, busy. Conjuring up another 6months of exciting events - trying to do our part to put Toronto on the world's jewellery map.
Not an easy feat, but an exciting one.

We have entered our second and final month of the Mosaics exhibit, featuring Turkish designer Murat Tunc. On June 25th, we even hosted a reception that allowed us the oppurtunity to meet some interesting people and to learn a little bit more about Turkey, (especially what's good to eat and drink.. mostly drink).

My favorite pieces, have always been the rings. They are chalk full of detail and intricacy, and they are unlike anything I have ever seen. So bear with me, as I take this time to do a little ode, to the ring...

24ct. gold plated-silver rings, featuring remarkable and intricate hand-painted porcelain squares. This reminds me of the intricate needlepoint that your grandmother, or great-grandmother used to do. Murat is all about the details.

What I have enjoyed most about this exhibit, is getting a better insight into Turkish art and design. I never realized how little I knew about this country. Istanbul is really a cultural crossroads, combining Persian, Greek, Roman, and Asian influences that create a beautiful aesthetic.
This ring is certainly one of my favorites, with a floral pattern that seems entrenched in Persia.

Not only does Murat design and manufacture each of these pieces, but he also carves each cameo he uses.

While Murat's work is inspired by many different cultural and historical aspects, his cameos are all inspired by famous Greek and Roman forms. Focusing mainly on the Gods and Goddesses.

It has been great having Murat's work at 18Karat. His unique aesthetic has really taken off, and we are excited to see where this artists goes from here.
Mosaics runs until the end of July, and we will be keeping a select line at our store into the future.

We are busy little bees over here at the shop, and isn't it exciting to have so much good stuff in the works. So forgive us if we took a little longer to announce our new designer showcase...

For the next two months we will be featuring Murat Tunc, a recently arrived Turkish sculpture/artist/jeweller/designer who creates some truly captivating pieces.

Murat's work is characterized by a meticulous attention to detail, the under-side of each ring, bracelet, and pendant is as beautiful as the top.

His work features porcelain disk which are painstakingly (to say the least) created.. dot by dot by dot. They are then fired at over 3000 degrees to ensure a long life.

But the show stoppers are really the rings - faceted quartz, from lemon to smoky to clear, with rubies or emeralds underneath that create excellent light play. It's really one of those.. seeing is believing.. sort of things.

Mosaics explores how tradition, culture, and history combine to shape our future and the way we express ourselves. Murat's work is the amalgamation of this idea, swirls of Greek, Persian, and Byzantine aesthetics blend and collide in each piece he creates.

Meet Alex..

You may have never met, but let me introduce you to one of the most expensive gemstones commercially available – Alexandrite. Not only can top quality alexandrite sell for over $100,000 a carat.

This beauty is remarkable for its seemingly magical colour changing capabilities - especially higher end stones - from an emerald green to a plum red.

A variety of chrysoberyl, (derived the Greek chrysos and beryllos meaning 'a gold-white spar' and not to be confused with beryl - those are emeralds and aquamarines to name a few) alexandrite is the result of a small scale replacement of aluminum by chromium oxide, a process which results in its stunning colour change. Green by daylight and red by incandescent - it's like having two stones in one.

This stone apparently acquired its name when Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiol discovered the gem upon the sixteenth birthday of the future Tsar, Alexander II of Russia.

The most stunning examples still come from Russia, specifically the Ural Mountains... but don't be fooled the fakers still run rife. Some lab-grown (synthetic) stones are actually corundum lanced with various chemicals such as vanadium or colour-changing spinel. Like always folks, if one of the most expensive stones is selling for a super deal..... too good to be true.

Recently we had a beautiful 1.05ct. alexandrite come through the shop, and honestly... what photos can't capture. As the stone dazzles, flecks of red, green, and plum compete for your attention in the most breath-taking way.

Between you and me... diamonds are soooo boring in comparison!

Liar Liar Pants on Fire: Imitation, Synthetic, and other Man-Made Gemstones

As with anything worth a pretty penny, gems (especially the big '4' – diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and rubies) are prone to imitation and... 'dark-dealings', (ooh yes, I said it.. dark dealings.)

So when putting down a large wad of cash on that which twinkles.. make sure, as always.. that you are dealing with a reputable and trusted jeweller. And remember – if it seems too good to be true, it always is.

Synthetic Stones

These stones are laboratory grown stones that exhibits essentially the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as their natural counterparts.
Formed under laboratory conditions, these stones are created using extreme pressure and heat.

While these gems are much, much cheaper then their natural counterparts (which is often the tip off that something just doesn't smell right) they are usually more expensive when compared to other fakers.

Imitation Stones

These stones are not necessarily laboratory grown stones, but are materials used to replicate the appearance of a costly stone, without having the same chemical composition. This ranges from stones such as synthetic white sapphire and cubic zirconia in place of a diamond to ceramics and glass. The history of imitation stones dates back hundreds of years, and of course we are all familiar with the rhinestone - originally crystal found along the Rhine that evolved into glass with a metallic backing.

Assembled Stones

This method is often reserved for specific types of gem stones, specifically opals and turquoise. Assembled stones are exactly as they sound – multiple layers or combinations of manufactured and/or natural materials fused, bonded, of joined together to imitate the appearance of a natural gemstone. In the case of an opal, it can exist as a solid stone, a doublet, or a triplet.
Doublet - when two layers (a black backing often made from plastic, glass, or inexpensive black potch and a thin layer of opal) are glued or fussed together.
Triplet - when three layers (a black backing often made from plastic, glass, or inexpensive black potch, a thin middle layer of opal, topped with a clear glass, quartz, or plastic) are glued or fussed together.
Reconstructed Turquoise - Pulverized turquoise that is fussed together.

All in all.. these man-made gems are worth next to nothing. With absolutely no resale value, unless they are of historical importance.. or are set in a gold or platinum setting, (and yes.. they do exist..) and then, they are only worth their setting.

Maybe it's the April showers, but this month I have found myself drawn to dramatic blues – the lucid shades of aquamarine and vibrant blue topaz especially.

So why not indulge in a little tour of some of the stunners at 18Karat?

Inspired by a floral bouquet of traditional and regal form – to me this stone seems reminiscent of the historical aristocracy... maybe a trinket of a French lady, or a Marie-Antoinette....

And we are back from my romantic wanderings.

This beautiful pendant features a striking 1.52ct. blue topaz, as well as 4 marquises cut diamonds and baguette accents – set in 18k white gold.

If you think size is what matters, then this 9.5ct. giant will certainly drive you wild – not only is she big, but beautiful as well.

This fancy floral cut aquamarine takes me to a remote Hawaiian beach with exquisite Polynesian flora... not to mention the cocktails.

The bezel is the oldest setting for a gem to occupy, and maybe that helps to explain the inherent romance this ring seems to hold – or possibly the intricate heart detail.

The setting, shape, and detail of this ring speaks to a Renaissance design sensibility, and for that, we love this little Romeo and Juliette ring.

Day at the Auction.

Last night I went to my first jewellery auction.

Excited by the flurry of bids and momentarily parallized in fear of drawing the auctineers attention (especially when the bids edged above the $10,ooo mark with an all bids final policy),
I was interested to see what would be the hot seller, what would flop, and how much I would know about either.

Of course I wasn't immune to the gems, and couldn't help but fall in love with a very lovely cabochon coral ring. I set a budget, calculated final costs after the buyers premium and taxes, and waited – hoping I would be lucky.

Everyone had gold fever, with high carated gold stealing the show as gold prices hover at all time highs.

(But I wondered how practical this venture was – in theory pure gold will take about $1000 an ounce... but add on the above mentioned buyers premiums and the cost of actually getting this new gold assayed and refined will chop off about 10% of your take home profit. So that $10,200 paid for a ten ounce bar of gold will ultimately cost the buyer approximately $13,255. Now, what is the gold value? Let's hypothetically take our 10 ounce gold bar to a refiner.. if it is not sealed in its original case it will have to be assayed to test the gold content with the additional refining cost added. Now we are looking at taking home about $9200.)

It was a little sad to know that some of these old beauties would be melted down, regardless of past history and craftsmanship, but out with the old and in with the new, (at 18Karat we get a lot of customers who use old gold to offset the price of a new creation).

Of course, when my lot came up, my heart started to pound so loudly that I thought my hope of no one noticing lot #113 would be ruined for sure. Of course, it wasn't meant to be and last night was not my night as my lovely red lady's ring went to someone in the back for $70 over my budget.

I have however, been bit by the auction bug, although I know I have a lot to learn.

The most important thing to remember is to do plenty of research (what are similar items selling for 'new') and set a budget you will stick with. No one wants to regret a lovely gem. And of course, you win some and you lose some - so enter an auction with an open mind and a light heart. Go because you love a piece for what it is and leave the business to the professionals - they know a good deal when the see one and they know when high is high enough, so don't get caught up in the adrenaline rush of a bidding war.

As our subscribers and followers are well aware of, this month 18Karat is featuring the work of Darlene Martin of Bijouxbead. Over the last couple of days I have started to get to know each of these intricate pieces, many of which feature elaborate lampwork and I couldn't help but ask – how do they, lampworkers, do that thing they do (Pictured left: close-up of Artist's Brush by Bijouxbead?)

Lampwork is a form of glasswork in which rods and sheets are melted and formed using a variety of tools, combined with blowing techniques and hand movements. It is a technique also referred to as flamework or torchwork as the traditional gas-lamp is no longer used.

Although its origins can be traced long into ancient times, it was in Murano Italy during the 14th century when the practice began to spread and grow in popularity. Lampworked beads have since remained the provenence of the Italians who have closely guarded their techniques.
Within the last couple of decades, North American artists have also begun to incorporate lampwork into their portfolios – these attempts have however been regarded by most as crude, until recently. Take a peek at a little bit of what it takes with a great short video here.

This Lapis pendant is Dino's latest creation, and with such intensely saturated blues, this one will certainly be memorable.

As luscious as mother nature could make it, these lapis sister stones have all of the depth of the sea with the billowing detail of every cloud in the sky.

Day at the Museum

Yesterday on my day off from the shop, I went on my long anticipated trip to the Royal Ontario Museum to finally see the Diamond Exhibit presented by De Beers.
While I had heard that lines ran for miles as patrons waited to catch a glimpse of the monster diamond – a late Wednesday afternoon left us relatively alone with the stones.

With gorgeous examples of gems throughout the ages, the most fascinating story of the exhibit - at least in my opinion - was the story of the gem cutter. Perhaps this thread runs rather subtlety through the show, but it is really quite amazing to watch as rough, hazy, diamond chunks evolve over hundreds of years into brilliantly faceted gems - the epitome of precision and the search for perfection.

Maybe I do not frequent the museum as much as some - having not been there for years - but I think the most impressive and spectacular part of the trip was the mineral and gem collection. Not only could you amaze at the utter genius and complexity of natures formations (from the perfectly symmetrical and proportioned geometric shapes to the fluid and organic) but also peruse exquisite examples of your not-so-usual faceted gems: tourmaline, tanzanite, as well as some exquisite examples of mandarin garnets, (and with a tiny little side-note I must add, that while to some these gems to seem rather exotic, after working at 18Karat for these last 7months I must say I have seen the lot as they glitter it up on in our display cases.)

Lovers of jewellery and beautiful things cannot help by be moved by these radiant gems.

Love Days: Victorian Romance.

As Queen Victoria ascended the throne of the expanding British Empire, the scarcity of diamonds and the high prices they demanded meant they remained the preserve of the upper and noble classes.

The 1870's however, changed everything. In South Africa, diamond mines began opening throughout the country thus increasing the diamond supply as well as decreasing their price. This saw jewellery design flourish as the burgeoning middle and working classes could now afford such luxuries.

To My Dearest...

Romanticism marked the Victorian era, highlighted through the works of Jane Austen - novels such as Pride and Prejudice. So it is no surprise that this sentiment should filter into jewellery design.

'Dearest' and 'Regard' rings seemed to epitomize the sentimental, with rings spelling out these words using the first letter of the stones name, (D=Diamond, E=Emerald, A=Amethyst, etc.)(A replica of a Victorian 'Dearest' Ring)

To My Betroved...

By the Victorian era, brides could expect two rings as part of the standard matrimonial tradition - a bejeweled engagement ring and a gold wedding band. The most popular engagement rings were the single stone rings flanked by diamonds. However, carved-detail half-hoop rings were also very popular (pictured left).

To My Eternal...

A revival of the serpent by the Victorians harked back to the Roman use of the snake as a symbol for eternity. With eyes of diamonds or rubies, these rings seem a somewhat sinister way to say 'I Love You'.

Love Days: Ancient Engagements

With Valentines Day looming, I had to ask the obvious question: why is jewellery so romantic and how has one item in particular come to symbolize love and the matrimonial bond?

While marriage may be as old as the cavemen, it was the ancient Egyptians - worshipers of the sun disk - who are accredited with the engagement ring. The uninterrupted curves of the circle was the ultimate symbol of the eternal, supporting the Egyptian belief that life, love, and happiness had no beginning or end. While it served to embody the never ending, the ring was certainly not a symbol of monogamy - the ancient Egyptians were famous for their concubines.

Continuing the tradition of the ring - although for very different reasons - the ancient Romans used the ring as a symbol of legally binding ownership of the bride. Engagement rings symbolized the transfer of possession of women (along with dowry and social status) by their fathers to their husbands without input from the brides themselves. (This practice remained steadfast for centuries, even into modern times.)

Perhaps one of the most intriguing engagement traditions is the puzzle ring, often referred to as the 'Turkish' ring, despite no clear link to this country as a site of origin. Believed to have been born in the Middle East over 2000 years ago, legend attributes the puzzle ring to a sheik or sultan who was madly in love with his wife ( or possessed incredible streaks of jealousy and mistrust) and in assuring her faithfulness commissioned a goldsmith to create a ring comprised of multiple and complex pieces that would collapse if removed. If ever his wife removed the ring in order to engage in an adulterous affair, the broken ring would be evidence of her infidelity.

The first recorded diamond engagement ring was presented to Mary of Burgundy (pictured to the right) by Archduke Maximillian of Austria in 1477. The archduke commissioned the ring to serves as a symbol of their two powerful families uniting. Such a gesture proved successful as Mary and Maximilian became the ancestors of Spanish, French, and English kings.

During the Middle Ages, diamonds took off as the symbol of the the matrimonial bond, due to their unbreakable and eternal characteristics. However, it was not until relatively recent times that diamonds became available to anyone who was not a member of the aristocracy or nobility.

The rumor of gold has forever raised pulses. The allure it holds over us, the ability within a lucky strike in the earth to create an overnight success has driven men to unimaginable lengths.

In the 16th century the Spanish plundered South and Central America for the gold of the ancient Inca and Aztec civilizations, melting down elaborate statues into easily transported blocks – thus erasing priceless cultural artifacts and slaughtering thousands. (Pictured right: Hernan Cortez, who destroyed the Aztec civilization with only a few hundred men with firearms and horses.)

But it is the gold rushes in the U.S. that we are most familiar with, after all it is because of this thirst for gold that many major cities came into being. The first important discovery of gold in the U.S. was in North Carolina in 1799. More gold was found later in Georgia in 1827. These discoveries produced so much gold, that the U.S. mint had to open additional branches to accommodate this gold influx.

The greatest gold rush of all brought 40,000 miners to California and Nevada in 1849 alone. Diggers came from all corners of the globe, from China, to Australia, to Europe.

In 9 years, over 820 tonnes was extracted from the Sacramento Valley alone. Almost half a million people moved to the area during the Gold Rush, all headed for a state which had still been a part of Mexico when it had begun. Settlers carved into the wilderness to create infrastructure in a place that had little development. To this day, some of the deepest gold shafts exist in North America, due to the famed "Mother Lode of California' - an extensive network of gold veins borne over 100million years ago.

Are Diamonds a Good Investment?

When most of us think of diamonds we are reminded of all the catch phrases ingrained in our minds - 'diamonds are forever' and 'diamonds are a girl's best friend'. For most of us, a diamond symbolizes beauty and romance – if need be, we can sell it in a pinch, (Pictured right: Marilyn Monroe, the most famous lover of diamonds).

But with the recent jump in the price of diamonds, some people have started to consider trading in diamonds, hoping to increase their wealth by reselling at a later date. But remember, a diamond pays no interest or dividend, so the only money to be made is on the final sale of the item.

Historically, diamond prices have not fallen in decades, and this is what gives gems the appearance of being a good investment. However, while diamond prices never drop out of site, the rate of price increase is questionable. If your money was invested somewhere else, could you earn a steeper price increase? The answer is usually yes.

If you purchase a diamond without having it appraised by a respected gemological institute, you run the risk of dispute when the time comes to sell your gem. Discrepancies between colour, cut, or clarity could affect the price tag of your stone by as much as several thousand dollars. Having a certified diamond by a well-respected and established gemological authority will reduce the risk of such disputes, but is not full proof.

Perhaps the most important risk to understand when contemplating investment in diamonds is the absence of liquidity – the inability to sell a diamond at will. Not only will you find it difficult to find a jeweller willing to buy a strange stone off the street, but you must also take under consideration the retail wholesale spread. Unless you have an established history with a diamond dealer, chances are you will be paying premium dollar for your new gem - at or near retail price. However, when attempting to sell your stone, you will find that most jewellers would only be willing to pay wholesale prices or below. You have to remember, why would they take a chance on you when they have a supplier who will lend them stones out on memo, which they can return without charge if they so choose?

Historically gold, diamonds, and jewellery were a wise investment in the event of a market crash or sudden crisis when money became worthless. In some parts of the world where currencies are unpredictable and unrest runs rife, these commodities may be the only way to move your wealth beyond borders - gems are valued everywhere. In these cases, you rarely make back what you spent on the item when originally purchased.

As a means to increase your personal wealth, diamonds are rarely ever your best option. Instead, they will continue to be purchased and appreciated for their inherent beauty and glamour.

Gold Series: Pocket Change

For thousands of years, gold was reserved for temples, tombs, and jewellery – hommage paid to the wealthy and powerful.

That was until 560B.C. when King Croesus of Lydia struck his first gold coin while trying to create a recognized and respected medium of exchange. When he ordered his heraldic device hammered on oblong bars of gold, he created a coin whose value was guaranteed by the King himself – thus inventing money. Made from an alloy of gold and silver, these coins represented a significant sum, (Pictured to the left: The Lydian Coin).

Before coinage, commodities were traded for other goods based on a barter system. Cattle for cocoa beans, shells for skins. The guarantee of gold coins gained popularity and the first formalized economy was born.

Today, gold no longer provides the same guarantee is once did in Lydia, however gold coins are certainly not obsolete. Gold coins are now separated into two categories: Numismatic and Bullion.

Bullion coins are typically used as a small investment, often fetching a modest sum above their weight in gold. Usually restrikes of formally minted coins from all over the world or commemorative pieces. As gold increases in value, the popularity of these coins also rise.

Numismatic coins are a cut above - coins created to be artistic masterpieces. They are valued for their rarity and condition by collectors who enjoy their golden design. As such, their value far exceeds their actual gold weight. The most valuable gold coin ever sold at auction was the Agustus St. Gaudens designed US Gold Double Eagle, or $20 gold coin (pictured to the right). Not just a beautifully crafted coin, but also one with a history so vivid as to form the basis of any good spy novel.

Minted in 1933, the same year President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that Americans could no longer own gold bullion. Suddenly, the minting of gold coins came to an abrupt halt and all of the 11,000 Gold Double Eagle coins were destined to be destroyed. Workers at the U.S. mint were quick to see how valuable these coins would be however, and as a result several were stolen.

While thousands were eventually accounted for, 20-30 remained outside of the grasp of the Secret Service. A Philadelphian jeweller, Israel Switt came into possession of 9 of these coins and soon sold one to King Farouk of Egypt before the authorities were even aware that they were missing.

In 1952, the coin briefly resurfaced, only to quickly disappear once it became clear that the Secret Service interest in it had not faded. In 1992, these two worlds finally collided when the coin was confiscated from Steven Fenton. Fenton filed a lawsuit against these government bodies, and was eventually awarded the coin - which he promptly sold for $7.6million.

In 2004, Joan Langboard, daughter of Israel Switt, found 10 of these coins in her fathers safe after his death. In an attempt to get these coins authenticated, they were also confiscated by the Secret Service. Her lawsuit is pending.

Gold Series: The Golden Sun

For many ancient civilizations, the sun was worshiped as only a god could be – praised and revered as the bringer of life. No civilization placed the sun in higher esteem than the Ancient Egyptians. It is then no surprise that the Egyptians, above all others, are associated with gold – the closest representative of the sun on Earth.

For the Egyptians, gold was considered the very flesh of the gods and only the Kings could adorn themselves in its sheen. Never tarnishing or degrading, gold was used extensively in statues and funerary masks - the most famous being the solid gold mask of Tutankhamen (seen to the right).

Linked to the concept of eternity, gold took center stage in the funeral chambers of the royal family and other wealthy Egyptians.

When Tutankhamen died in 1350 B.C., everything the boy king might need in the afterlife was buried with him: chariots, chests, a throne, crowns, collars, amulets, charms, and even the walls were worked exquisitely in gold. In order to provide the vast quantity of gold required for such extravagant accommodations, more then 4,000 Egyptian slaves were forced to extract gold from the hills, while hundreds more searched the ancient world looking for more.

Brilliant, defiant, and the most prestigious of the classic gemstones - the diamond epitomizes unyielding power and invincible strength. It is these unbreakable characteristics that have evolved the diamond into the icon of the marriage covenant. (Below: Renaissance Ring, available for purchase here.)

Before it became the icon of the Christian marriage, the diamond was marveled more for its magical abilities than for its beauty. The hardest substance known to man and the most effective substance to disperse white light into its component spectrum colours (when appropriately cut) - diamonds have captured our imagination for thousands of years.

Found on nearly every continent, many ancient civilizations associated the diamond with fire or lightning, some attributing their creation to the thunderbolt.

Perhaps one of the most famous diamonds is the mysterious Hope Diamond – a gem surrounded in intrigue. From the moment it was allegedly stolen from the eye of a Hindu idol, the stone and all those who have owned it are said to be cursed. The first know precursor to this remarkable stone was the Travernier blue - a blue triangular cut stone of 115 carats.

This stone was sold to King Louis XIV of France who had the stone recut by his court jeweller to a 67 1/8carat stone, renamed the Blue Diamond of the Crown or simply the French Blue. Legend has it that King Louis XIV's wife, Marie Antoinette (to the right) wore the diamond around her neck as she was beheaded upon the guillotine. However, the fate of the stone was far less blood thirsty. While the King and Queen were confined in their palace during the early stages of revolution, the diamond along with many of the other crown jewels were stolen by thieves believed to have been hired by the leaders of the revolution. While many of these gems were recovered, the French Blue was never seen again.

Almost 20 years later, a blue diamond weighing 45.52ct. appeared in a published catalogue of gem collector Henry Phillip Hope. While speculation about the Hope Diamond having been cut from the missing French Blue has always existed, it was only in the earlier part of the 21st century that researchers using CAD technologies were able to confirm this suspicion.

Through bankruptcy and death, the stone was sold from rich families to tycoons, crossing the Atlantic on several occasions. This rocky past combined with a false report in the New York Times, was pounced upon by jeweller Phillip Cartier who embellished these lurid tales to intrigue Evalyn Walsh McLean into buying the Hope Diamond in 1911. The 20th century saw the birth of the Hope Diamond Curse, with legends abounding about jewellers, owners, and even delivery boys meeting an untimely demise at the hands of the gem.

Since arriving at the Smithonian Museum of Natural History, no unusual accidents have been related to it.

Old Lady on Your Neck You Say?

Cameos, perhaps more then any other piece of jewellery are seen as the quintessential heirloom - not something we would purchase for ourselves, but certainly something we would gladly accept as a treasure passed down.

Perhaps because we are trying to distance ourselves from the traditional or the value we place on the innovative and the 'never-before-seen' that cameos have fallen to the wayside. However, it is undeniable that these gems are intriguing - what are these often haunting works of art?

Cameos are believed to date back to the ancient Egyptians, focused largely in Alexandria. Evolving out of the carving practices of the time, record keeping and communication, cameos carried a moral or ethical statement which the wearer intended on conveying to those around them.

Prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans, cameos depicted the gods and goddesses as well as other mythological figures. Living heroes and leaders were also popular subject matter.

One of the most famous surviving cameos of the time is the one to the right, a portrait of the Emperor Augustus, which now resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Predominantly carved from stone, such as agate and sardonyx, that allowed carvings to have as many as three different tones.

During the Renaissance, the resurgence of Ancient Greek literature and art meant that cameos were again in fashion - often with the same set of themes which dominated that of the ancients. However, shell was now used in a large portion of cameos, especially in European and Mediterranean countries.

While cameos never really fell out of favor, they again entered the limelight in a big way with Queen Victoria adopting them as a favorite accessory. Cameos tied high on the neck with black ribbon back then may explain why cameos are now associated with the uptight and staunch.

However, the pure skill and artistic expression of these little treasures should never be underscored. Whether antique or new, these pieces possess an aura and personality like no other.

Diamond Series: Colour

The first image that comes to mind when we think about diamonds is that of the pure, colourless, glacial stone. Most stones however, possess a tint of yellow, brown, or grey which can often become visible under certain lighting conditions.

Using the G.I.A (Gemmological Institute of America) grading system, the colour of each diamond is graded on an alphabetical scale ranging from D (totally colourless) to Z (diamonds with a definite colour).
As a general rule, the less colour a diamond possesses, the more desirable it becomes. Coloured diamonds have however, been growing steadily in popularity with a variety of colours, ranging from yellow to brown, green to pink, and black to blue depending on the impurities present.

Consumers should be aware that like many gemstones, diamonds can be thermal treated to alter poor quality stones into fancy (strongly coloured) diamonds. This should significantly lower the price tag of these treatable stones when compared to their naturally occurring counterparts.

When searching for the perfect colourless diamonds, we recommend limiting yourself to a range of E-G. Any stone farther down the scale and your diamond runs the risk of making any colored hues more obvious.

It is also important to note that the colour of the setting will also affect your diamond. If your diamond is a very white stone, keep it in a white gold or platinum setting. Putting it in a yellow setting will cause your diamond to seem less white. If a yellow band is what you desire, consider having a yellow shank and a white 'head' where the diamond sits.

If you diamond has a yellow tinge, a white setting will make it more prominent. A yellow setting on the other hand could make the diamond seem whiter when compared to the gold sheen of the band.

Diamond Series: Clarity

When the earth was born and it shivered and shook with the birth-pangs of formation, carbon was crystallized into the diamonds that have enthralled us all.

Nature did however, leaves its birthmark in the form of inclusions which reside in most stones. Inclusions appear as small black or grey specks which dot or streak through a diamonds interior.

The size, position, and number of inclusions will impact how well light will travel through the stone, how brilliant it will sparkle, and its clarity grade.

The most popular grading system in North America is that of the G.I.A (Gemological Institute of America) which uses a descending scale of Flawless, IF (Internally Flawless), VVS (Very Very Small Inclusions), VS (Very Small Inclusions), SI (Slight Inclusions), and I (Imperfect).

Alphabet aside, what does all of this mean?

We never want to hear about flaws when talking about our prized gems, but does a diamond have to be virtually flawless to be a beautiful stone?

Certainly not. We recommend diamonds within the range of VS-1 to SI-1, as the flaws in these stones are rarely, if not impossibly, detected with the naked eye, and the prices become more affordable (especially around the SI side).

Natural Sapphires?

In 1902, the first synthetic sapphire was grown by French chemist Auguste Verneuil using fine alumina powder and an oxyhydrogen flame. We have come a long way since then.

Sapphires have since proliferated in labs and factories, with over 250 tonnes flooding the gem market in 2003 alone. But synthetic gems are only the tip of this luxurious blue-violet iceberg. Almost all sapphires, 99%, are heat-treated in order to enhance their colour.

From Montana to Sri Lanka, Australia to China, these otherwise unattractive grey stones are mined from the earth and are heated at high temperatures in order to improve both their clarity and colour.

So, what does it mean when one stumbles across a 'natural sapphire'?

Firstly, the word 'natural' is in an of itself problematic, because in the world of gems it is not without its own specific interpretations. For most of us, 'natural' speaks to something created in nature without the heavy hand of man; something that exists separately from us. However, in this age of enhancement technologies, 'natural' is taken to mean something else.
For most of us who are new to the business of gems, it would seem obvious that a natural sapphire would be one which was neither synthetic nor heat-treated. However, for many in the jewellery business, a natural sapphire is one mined from the earth, regardless of whether it is followed by heat-treatment.

So, is the moral of the story buyer beware?

Yes and no. Natural sapphires are a rarity, but not an impossibility. Most stones claiming to be natural (mined and treatment-free) are accompanied by papers which support their claim, and this is something all consumers should look for if they are considering these stones, and their larger price tag. Consumers should also ask not only questions but also about what guarantee they will have that this stone is the genuine article.

But that is not to say that treated sapphires are to be avoided. Treated stones come with enhanced colour and clarity, not to mention a cheaper price range. I think the most important lesson to take from this is that regardless of whether the stone is "100% natural" or "a little bit treated", the consumer should know exactly what they are holding.

November: 18 Karat Celebrates the Colour Purple

Instead of keeping with the birthstone theme, 18 Karat has decided to break the mold. Instead we have chosen to celebrate the colour purple, and all the luscious stones who share this hue.

The word 'purple' originates in the Greek name for a dye manufactured in antiquity from the mucus-secretions of the spiny dye-murex. Glamorous.

This has a lot to do with why purple has long been associated with luxury and nobility – only the aristocracy could afford blue and purple dyes, while the peasantry was resigned to brown and green. (Purple was apparently Cleopatra's favorite colour).

This remarkable colour has long been associated with the supernatural. Perhaps because of its presence in all sorts of natural phenomenon: the Northern Lights and the fantastic floral arrangements of Mother Nature.

Some popular purple gems include Amethyst, Tanzanite, and Sugilite.

Amethyst comes from Greek, meaning 'not intoxicated'. It was believed that the wearer would be protected from drunkenness and seduction. An amethyst amulet was also worn by medieval knights who believed it would protect them during battle.
Amethyst ranges in hue, from a soft lilac to a deep purple. The ideal grade, "Deep Siberian", has a purple hue of 75-80% and a blue hue of 15-20%, with possible secondary red tones.

Tanzanite was only recently discovered in 1967 in the hills of Northern Tanzania by Manuel de Souza, and as a result, has been referred to as 'The Gemstone of the 20th Century'.
With its striking and alluring aura, combined with its rarity, Tanzanite has become a symbol for those wishing to set themselves apart from the rest.

Sugilite has also been a relatively recent discovery, discovered in Japan i 1944, but also found in Canada, Northern South Africa, and India. Sugilite isn believed to balance the mind and body, to protect the wearer against anger, anxiety, and other negative energies.

Why 18 karat gold?

Let's briefly get to the basics: why choose 18K gold? What is the difference between 18K and 14K, or even 10K?

The main difference between 18K, 14K, and 10K is of course the amount of pure gold within the alloy being used. As we all know, pure gold is a very soft metal, prone to nicks and scratches which make that bling... not so blingy. To combat this, gold is mixed with other - tougher - metals which give gold the back-bone it needs.
In the case of 18K yellow gold, gold accounts for 75% (more gold, more shine) while silver (16.6% or 12.5%) and copper (8.4% or 12%) account for the rest. Contrary to popular belief, 18K is not a soft metal and with the above mentioned alloys, it can rival the sturdiness of a 10K.

The higher gold content in 18K also means that wearers are less likely to encounter an adverse reaction to the metal, which occurs with lower karats, especially 10K or less.

At 18Karat, we only deal in 18 karat white and yellow gold (or platinum) because we firmly believe these are of the finest quality and durability.

October Wedding Band

This custom piece marks the end of our October showcase, and isn't it sharp.

Our client wanted a wedding band that stood out from the myriad of Tiffany bands that seem to abound, and this gentleman wanted something something different.

Made from 18 Karat white gold, this band features two off- center grooves which contrast the sandblasted texture of the outer layer.

Star Rubies.

Of course I have heard of rubies –– blood red or pink, but I had never heard of a star ruby.
That was until I found an unusual stone in the shop, sort of deep purple with crazy internal rays that seemed to follow you around.

I asked Dino about this strange little piece and he told me it was a star ruby. Needless to say, it has now made it on my top 10 list of stones.

Turns out, star rubies are a rare form of the rubies we all know and love. These gems contain a sharp six-rayed star which glides across the stone as it is moved –– due to light refracting off the needle-like rutile inclusions within the stone.

Star rubies were worn on the armour of knights who believed doing so would protect them from their enemy on the battlefield.

Famous rubies include this little lady on the right, the Delong Star Ruby, that weighs 100.32ct, and resides at New York's Natural History Museum. This giant gem was the object of a famous heist, by Jack Murphy and two other accomplices.

Not only did Jack and his friends make off with the Delong Star Ruby, but they also managed to steal the most famous Star Sapphire as well, the Star of India.

This Star Sapphire, believed to be the largest sapphire of its kind to have ever been found. The gem was recovered a few weeks after the burglary in a locker at a Miami Bus Terminal.

Who wouldn't love a gem the size of a golf ball?

October Custom Nameplate Necklace

This month I got my first shot at designing for 18 Karat.
A client was looking to make a unique nameplate necklace for his partner for their anniversary.

My drawings became a digital model, that became a cast, which became a lovely 18k white gold and diamond necklace.

It could be just me, but there is something that has to be said about being apart of something which would later be admired and treasured by someone else.

18 Karat Jewellers has spanned across two generations, with brothers Massimo and Dino Giannetti carrying this family-run business into Toronto's downtown core, where it has lived for over 25 years.
Dino, a Master Goldsmith, creates unique and striking pieces in house, using precious and often unusual stones.

I have no experience with jewellery. This is something reader, I will not lie about.
I have the small pearl studs you receive after graduation. The small heart pendant with the itsy bitsy diamond you receive from some enamored high-school crush.
But, carats and karats?
Topaz and quartz?
Sapphires and rubies?
Diamonds and diamonds and diamonds?
Again, I will not lie.

But almost four months has passed since I joined the 18 Karat family, and slowly but surely, I have begun to learn a few things.
I know that there is more to a diamond then its sparkle.
I know that every piece of jewellery has a story to tell.
